How to take care of your hearing aids

so that you can hear your very best!

After making an investment to get hearing aids to hear better, it makes sense for you to keep them in best working condition for as long as possible. While we are more than happy to help send them away to be fixed, we understand how hard it is to be without your hearing aids for a period of time. Prevention is always better than cure, and here are different things you can do actively to take care of your hearing aids and improve their lifespan.

1. Keep Dry

Hearing aids are made of delicate electronic components, and what do electronic devices dislike most? Water. Any exposure to water, humidity, and perspiration can cause serious damage to your hearing aids. It is important to keep water and moisture away from your hearing aids. Although modern hearing aids are built to be fairly water resistant, preventative measures is always good to avoid moisture buildup within your hearing aids.

Light Moisture

Sometimes, wearing hearing aids can be so comfortable that you don’t realise you are wearing them. As a result, many people accidentally wear them into shower. To prevent this. it is wise to develop a good habit of handling your hearing aids every time you take shower or bath. For example, leave your hearing aids in their storage case in the same place every time, instead of in the bathroom. This also prevents you from exposing them to humidity or accidentally knocking them into the sink or toilet.

Water Activities

If you are planning to do any water activity, remember to take your hearing aids out and keep them away from the water in a safe place like a storage case. It is also best to take out your hearing aids when you know you are going to sweat a lot. Sweat can easily get into the hearing aids which would damage the electronic components and lead to corrosion of battery contact points.

Drying Kit

If your hearing aids are exposed to water or moisture build-up, keep them turned off and use a drying kit overnight to remove any excess moisture. Hearing aid drying kit is one of the single most important investments if you want to take care of your hearing aids effectively. There are 2 types of drying kits – drying jar and electronic drying kit. The drying jar is a simple and cheaper option, where you dry your hearing aids using a drying tablet in the jar. The electronic drying kit is run on electricity. Some of them even have the option to disinfect your hearing aids using UV light.

If your hearing aids are accidentally exposed to large amounts of water, please contact us right away.

2. Keep Clean

Whenever hearing aid users tell us that their hearing aids are not working, the most common reason is always ear wax blockage. Thus ear wax is often known as the hearing aids’ worst enemy. While having ear wax is normal, there are different things you can do to minimise the problem caused by ear wax to the hearing aids.

Wipe & Brush

We recommend wiping and brushing your hearing aids every morning before you wear your hearing aids. The ear wax on the hearing aids in the morning tends to be drier and easier to be removed. Wiping and brushing the hearing aids regularly also prevents wax from accumulating and clogging the critical components, such as the microphones or receivers. For wiping, we recommend using a soft cloth, tissue, instead of alcohol wipe or cleansers (they harm the internal components and circuitry).

Wax Filter

Your hearing aids are likely to have wax filters (or wax guards) to keep ear wax out of the electronics. Different brands of hearing aids also have their own wax filters. Make sure you have the correct ones in stock in case wax blockage happens again. Feel free to contact us for more wax filters, or visit us and we’ll change them for you.

Ear Cleaning

If ear wax blockage occurs frequently, this might mean that your ears are generating more ear wax than usual. It is wise to get your ears cleaned and ear wax removed regularly. If you need ear wax removal services, please contact us. We have a special ear wax removal suction machine that can help you manage your ear wax issue.

3. Keep Safe

Hearing aids are tiny and they get misplaced very easily. To prevent unnecessary damages or loss of your hearing aids, they should be stored in a consistent, safe manner consistently.

Store Well

The best way to keep them safe is to store them in the protective case whenever you finished using them. The protective case are meant to be used. However, keep in mind that the protective case is enclosed. As mentioned above, moisture is an issue. Therefore, it is a good idea to open up the case at night, and let fresh air circulate through the hearing aids to relieve moisture. If you want spare ones for your car or office, feel free to tell us.

Also, hearing aids should not be wrapped with tissue papers, or else they might get mistaken as rubbish.

Children & Pets

For those living with small children and pets, hearing aids should be kept out of reach from them. Children might think that they are toys, and we all know how much they like to put stuff in their mouth. Animals might be attracted to the human scent and think that hearing aids are food! Hearing aid batteries are even tinier than the hearing aids, so it is also important to keep them away from children and pets.

Regular Service

Hearing aid is a very useful tool to help you reconnect to your world. The more you use it, the more benefit you will get. However, since they are made of delicate electronics, they need ongoing servicing too. To help fight regular wear and tear, we recommend you to bring your hearing aids to us for a regular servicing and tuning. The above measures will surely help you keep your hearing aids work better and longer. If you experience any problems with hearing aids issue, ear wax issue, or anything hearing-related, please feel free to contact us. We are here to help you.
